The National Association of State Procurement Officials (NASPO) and the North Carolina Department of Administration (NC DOA) engaged with 29 students from North Carolina State University’s Supply Chain Club on March 19th to introduce them to public procurement careers. Hosted by NASPO’s Academic Partner, NC State, the event aligns with the Supply Chain Club’s mission to support Poole College of Management students through career guidance, professional support, and educational resources.
During the meeting, Shaquasia Barksdale, NASPO’s Partnerships Manager, led discussions on NASPO’s resources for students interested in pursuing procurement careers. The session also included an overview of the NC DOA Central Purchasing Office, presented by David O’Neal, State Chief Procurement Officer, and Reenada Perez, State Procurement Education Manager.
Luis Garcia, President of the NC State Supply Chain Club, expressed his gratitude for the engagement, saying, “I sincerely appreciate NASPO and NC DOA for taking the time to speak with our student members. Shaquasia Barksdale facilitated the meeting exceptionally well, and David O’Neal delivered an engaging educational presentation that encouraged students to explore public procurement as a career path.”
O’Neal also emphasized the importance of these discussions: “We are extremely appreciative of the NC State Supply Chain Club allowing the NC DOA’s Division of Purchase & Contract to come speak about public procurement and the impacts that we make daily as we serve the citizens of our state. The conversation prompted thought-provoking questions from the audience, awareness of our roles, and excitement about potential career opportunities. It is exciting to see students having an interest in public service.”
This engagement highlights NASPO’s commitment to fostering the next generation of procurement professionals by connecting students with industry experts, providing educational resources, and showcasing the career opportunities.
